1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Well, that's hard to say," said the man. "You might get one ina week, or it might be a month. You'd get the first thing thatwe thought you could do."
2. "Yes," said Carrie, tripping elatedly away.
3. "Yes, sir; she surprised me the other night. By George, if shedidn't."
4. He looked down at his paper and shook his head negatively.
5. During the acts Carrie found herself listening to him veryattentively. He mentioned things in the play which she mostapproved of--things which swayed her deeply.
6. When he had finished it, he stood holding it in his hands. Theaudacity of the thing took his breath. It roused his ire also--the deepest element of revolt in him. His first impulse was towrite but four words in reply--"Go to the devil!"--but hecompromised by telling the boy that there would be no reply. Then he sat down in his chair and gazed without seeing, contemplating the result of his work. What would she do aboutthat? The confounded wretch! Was she going to try to bulldoze himinto submission? He would go up there and have it out with her, that's what he would do. She was carrying things with too high ahand. These were his first thoughts.

1. "I'll tell you what I'll do," he added. "I'll write you, care ofthis West Side Post-office. Could you call next Tuesday?"
2. Hurstwood thought a while. It was all up with the bluff aboutmoney and investment. She could see now that he was "broke."
3. "I'll give them something this time," said the second officer, whose patience was becoming worn. Hurstwood suffered a qualm ofbody as the car rolled up. As before, the crowd began hooting, but now, rather than come near, they threw things. One or twowindows were smashed and Hurstwood dodged a stone.
4. He was an exceedingly genial soul, this young man, and whollyfree of affectation. It seemed to Carrie he was as yet onlyovercoming the last traces of the bashfulness of youth. He didnot seem apt at conversation, but he had the merit of being welldressed and wholly courageous. Carrie felt as if it were notgoing to be hard to talk to him.
5. Hurstwood's brow was wet. He was deep in now--very deep for him.Sixty dollars of his good money was up. He was ordinarily nocoward, but the thought of losing so much weakened him. Finallyhe gave way. He would not trust to this fine hand any longer.
6. But the officer turned a deaf ear.

1. Not all of this was delivered by one man. It came from here andthere, incorporated with much more of the same sort and curses.
2. A youth with tan-coloured hair, that needed clipping very badly, came shuffling along between the machines, bearing a basket ofleather findings under his left arm, and pressed against hisstomach. When near Carrie, he stretched out his right hand andgripped one girl under the arm.
3. "I'm going up the street for a walk," she said after supper.
4. "I can't wait any longer," urged Hurstwood. "If that is toosoon, come Saturday."
5. She reached in her purse and took out one of the bills. The womanasked if she would wear the coat and went off. In a few minutesshe was back and the purchase was closed.
6. "Well, you'd better go sit down, then."

1. The upshot of this was that the change was eventually effected;not without great gloom on the part of Carrie. It reallyaffected her more seriously than anything that had yet happened. She began to look upon Hurstwood wholly as a man, and not as alover or husband. She felt thoroughly bound to him as a wife, and that her lot was cast with his, whatever it might be; but shebegan to see that he was gloomy and taciturn, not a young, strong, and buoyant man. He looked a little bit old to her aboutthe eyes and mouth now, and there were other things which placedhim in his true rank, so far as her estimation was concerned. She began to feel that she had made a mistake. Incidentally, shealso began to recall the fact that he had practically forced herto flee with him.
2. Carrie went out and there he sat, determining to do something.
3. She looked at him, and he laughed reassuringly.
4、 It was customary for them to discuss the regular summer outing atthis season of the year.
5、 The second time he gave a similar excuse, but the third time thefeeling about it in Carrie's mind was a little bit out of theordinary.

He was beginning to find, in his wretched clothing and meagrestate of body, that people took him for a chronic type of bum andbeggar. Police hustled him along, restaurant and lodginghousekeepers turned him out promptly the moment he had his due;pedestrians waved him off. He found it more and more difficultto get anything from anybody.

{ She did not explain that the thought, however, had aroused allthe antagonism of her nature. Columbia City, what was there forher? She knew its dull, little round by heart. Here was thegreat, mysterious city which was still a magnet for her. Whatshe had seen only suggested its possibilities. Now to turn backon it and live the little old life out there--she almostexclaimed against the thought.
