1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Oh, stop!" said Carrie."Well, I'll not be made a fool of," exclaimed Drouet. "You maytrifle around with him if you want to, but you can't lead me.You can tell me or not, just as you want to, but I won't fool anylonger!"
2. "Well, you can go out to the flat then, that's all right. Youdon't need to stay in the room. Just take it and leave yourthings there."
3. "Well," he said, after a time, his nature recovering itself,"that's a pretty tough game over there."
4. "I didn't marry you," he said, in a snarling tone.
5. "I'll not give him the rest of my money," said Carrie. "I doenough. I am going to get me something to wear."
6. "By damn, I wish they'd hurry up."

1. "Couldn't help it," said the drummer, "I've been busy."
2. Meanwhile he gave a thought now and then to Carrie. What couldbe the trouble in that quarter? No letter had come, no word ofany kind, and yet here it was late in the evening and she hadagreed to meet him that morning. To-morrow they were to have metand gone off--where? He saw that in the excitement of recentevents he had not formulated a plan upon that score. He wasdesperately in love, and would have taken great chances to winher under ordinary circumstances, but now--now what? Supposingshe had found out something? Supposing she, too, wrote him andtold him that she knew all--that she would have nothing more todo with him? It would be just like this to happen as things weregoing now. Meanwhile he had not sent the money.
3. "Hurstwood!" exclaimed Carrie, rising. Her face had changedseveral shades since this announcement was made. She lookedwithin and without herself in a half-dazed way.
4. Outside in the little lobby another scene was begin enacted.Without the interest of Hurstwood, the little hall would probablyhave been comfortably filled, for the members of the lodge weremoderately interested in its welfare. Hurstwood's word, however, had gone the rounds. It was to be a full-dress affair. The fourboxes had been taken. Dr. Norman McNeill Hale and his wife wereto occupy one. This was quite a card. C. R. Walker, dry-goodsmerchant and possessor of at least two hundred thousand dollars, had taken another; a well-known coal merchant had been induced totake the third, and Hurstwood and his friends the fourth. Amongthe latter was Drouet. The people who were now pouring here werenot celebrities, nor even local notabilities, in a general sense. They were the lights of a certain circle--the circle of smallfortunes and secret order distinctions. These gentlemen Elksknew the standing of one another. They had regard for theability which could amass a small fortune, own a nice home, keepa barouche or carriage, perhaps, wear fine clothes, and maintaina good mercantile position. Naturally, Hurstwood, who was alittle above the order of mind which accepted this standard asperfect, who had shrewdness and much assumption of dignity, whoheld an imposing and authoritative position, and commandedfriendship by intuitive tact in handling people, was quite afigure. He was more generally known than most others in the samecircle, and was looked upon as some one whose reserve covered amine of influence and solid financial prosperity.
5. "She was good-looking, wasn't she?" said the manager's companion, who had not caught all the details of the game he had played.
6. "I'll tell you what you do," he said. "You come with me. I'lltake care of you."

1. It is curious to note how quickly a profession absorbs one.Carrie became wise in theatrical lore, hearing the gossip oflittle Lola. She learned what the theatrical papers were, whichones published items about actresses and the like. She began toread the newspaper notices, not only of the opera in which shehad so small a part, but of others. Gradually the desire fornotice took hold of her. She longed to be renowned like others, and read with avidity all the complimentary or critical commentsmade concerning others high in her profession. The showy worldin which her interest lay completely absorbed her.
2. "You're not doing anything. Get yourself a nice pair of shoesand a jacket."
3. Carrie looked over the large bill of fare which the waiter handedher without really considering it. She was very hungry, and thethings she saw there awakened her desires, but the high pricesheld her attention. "Half broiled spring chicken--seventy-five.Sirloin steak with mushrooms--one twenty-five." She had dimlyheard of these things, but it seemed strange to be called toorder from the list.
4. "No use," he thought. "I might as well go on back home."
5. "The offices are up those steps," said the bluecoat. His facewas a very neutral thing to contemplate. In his heart of hearts,he sympathised with the strikers and hated this "scab." In hisheart of hearts, also, he felt the dignity and use of the policeforce, which commanded order. Of its true social significance,he never once dreamed. His was not the mind for that. The twofeelings blended in him--neutralised one another and him. Hewould have fought for this man as determinedly as for himself, and yet only so far as commanded. Strip him of his uniform, andhe would have soon picked his side.
6. Carrie gazed without exactly getting the import of what he meant.

1. She gazed at him--a pythoness in humour.
2. "I know," said Carrie.
3. He received no answer. Carrie was quieting, however, under theinfluence of his plea.
4、 "I must return to the city, no matter what dangers may lurk here.I must go, secretly if I can; openly, if I must."
5、 "You'd better see the manager of the company," he returned, "buthe isn't here now."

Sunday passed with equal doubts, worries, assurances, and heavenknows what vagaries of mind and spirit. Every half-hour in theday the thought would come to her most sharply, like the tail ofa swishing whip, that action--immediate action--was imperative. At other times she would look about her and assure herself thatthings were not so bad--that certainly she would come out safeand sound. At such times she would think of Drouet's adviceabout going on the stage, and saw some chance for herself in thatquarter. She decided to take up that opportunity on the morrow.
